Many people are familiar with the risks of carbon monoxide, an odorless gas, and that a rotten egg odor is an indicator of a natural gas leak. However, another potentially alarming smell homeowners should be aware of is a fishy odor.

A recent post by Katie Rose Dugger on Facebook sheds light on this. Katie shared her experience about an unusual fishy smell persisting in her son's bedroom. After deep cleaning and still not being able to identify the source, she turned to Google for answers. What she found was alarming: a fishy odor can be indicative of melting plastic from electrical outlets.

On further inspection of her home, Katie discovered an outlet that was, in fact, overheating, causing plugs to melt. She promptly called an electrician who confirmed the existence of a defective, loose wire in the outlet, leading to its complete replacement.

This story underscores the importance of staying informed and vigilant about household smells. If you ever encounter a fishy smell in your home and can't pinpoint its origin, it might be prudent to inspect your electrical outlets and plugs for signs of overheating. Such proactive actions could potentially prevent dangerous house fires and ensure the safety of all residents.
